Unit emissions of vehicles in Finland
Freight road traffic
Freight road traffic can be examined from two different
perspectives:
1. Unit emissions by type of vehicle
Driving while unladen, full or partially loaded. Using these figures, emissions can be calculated for any trip
(remember to include return trip, often unladen).
2. Unit emissions by type of goods delivered
Emissions per tonne kilometre, categorized by the type of goods transported.
The figures represent the average situation: the shares of highway and urban driving,
return trips with empty loads etc. These figures are applicable to rough estimates when
only the amount of tonne kilometres [tkm] is known, that is the product of tonnes of freight [t] and
the distance [km].
When more precise information is available (route, vehicle type, load factor etc.) unit emissions by type of vehicle should be used.
